AISI 4130 Steel Hardening & Quenching 4130 Steel is usually used at 18-22 HRc, If needs, AISI 4130 alloy steel 4130 and 4140 Heat Treatments - Industrial HeatingJun 08, 2011 · For 4130 steel, the recommended heat treatment consists of heating to austenitizing temperature, typically 1600°F (870°C), followed by water quenching. Water quenching will achieve a higher as-quenched hardness than oil quenching. Tempering (reheating after quenching) will achieve the desired hardness range.
Jun 06, 2014 · At 45Rc you are asking 4130 for everything it's got. It has the lowest carbon content of any directly hardenable alloy steel which is why it's used for welded structures. Like JRIowa said, 28-32 Rc is more appropriate for it. It's greatly overrated for machined parts. The relationship of hardness to tensile strength is a direct translation in 4130M - Energy Alloys, LLCAISI 4130 MOD:ASTM A-29, ASTM A-519, & API 5CT GENERAL SCOPE:4130 Mod is a low alloy steel that is commonly used in a variety of down hole tools, casing, tubulars, and accessories that require deep hardening strength with excellent impact resistance. It is a heat treatable alloy steel AISI 4130 Aircraft Steel (AMS 6345 / AMS 6346 / AMS 6350)Alloy 4130 (AISI 4130) is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel. Alloy 4130 is a widely used Aircraft Steel due to its weldability, ease of fabrication and mild hardenability. The hardenability and weldability of Alloy 4130 are considered equivalent to 8630 (MIL-S-6250) .

Machining 4130 (prehard or Annealed?)Nov 30, 2011 · 4130 has a machinability rating of about 35%, meaning your speed will be about 1/3 that of mild steel. Using carbide try about 100 SFPM and HSS about 30 SFPM. 38Rc is not a problem with carbide, might have to run slower. 4130 hardens about 1" deep so if you have cross sections exceeding that you should rough machine before HT.

Understanding Rockwell AGRussellWhen looking at knives you will often see a number in the specs with RC after it. This number represents the Rockwell Rating. The Rockwell rating is a scale that is used to measure the hardness of a material. An example is stainless steel AUS-8, which usually 57-59 Rc. The Rockwell hardness test is the industry standard for knives.
